I te wheiao, ki te ao mārama

From the dawn light, to the world of light

This well-known saying refers to a world constantly emerging from darkness into light. It is an aspiration of Māori origin passed down from generation to generation.

It is a re-enactment of Tāne separating earth and sky, the means by which light came into the world. Tāne was the father of humankind. When he separated his parents, Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and Ranginui (Sky Father), the sun was able to shine into the world that was created.

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

In te ao Māori, the wellbeing of our whānau has always been paramount with the pā being the focal point for whānau. Te Pou Matakana, which means, “the sentinel tower” was the main focus point of the pā and ensured the safety of the whānau.

All important information passed through it, both from the outside world and within the pā. The sentinels would then ensure that the right information was distributed to the right people and make sure that the welfare of everyone – whānau, hapū, and iwi – was taken into consideration when making decisions.

As the sentinel tower was embedded in the pā site, TPM will be embedded and connected to the communities TPM serves. TPM will search for new opportunities for whānau and the best and most innovative ways of achieving outcomes. TPM will share this knowledge with providers with the goal of assisting whānau to achieve successful futures.

Tautokona te whānau, kia angitū, kia whai hua

Supporting successful whānau

The vision of Te Pou Matakana is “supporting successful whānau”. Te Pou Matakana, the North Island whānau Ora Commissioning Agency continues to support the aspirations of our whānau as they navigate their journeys towards becoming strong and resilient.

Our Whakapapa

Te Pou Matakana is the Whānau Ora Commissioning agency for Te Ika a Māui.

We work alongside whānau to understand what they need to be successful and work with Whānau Ora Partners to meet those whānau needs.

Te Pou Matakana takes an innovative, whānau-centric approach to commissioning.

We work with whānau best interests in mind and bring resources closer to whānau and communities we serve.

We know that what we do is not just for today, but for tomorrow, so we will ensure we operate with a view to the future – for future generations of whānau.
